The Macquarie Fields police chase

The following letter was published in the Sydney Morning Herald on Tuesday. I agree with it.

The Editor, Sydney Morning Herald.

Dear Sir or Madam,

It seems to me that the letter writers and media commentators who blame the driver and passengers of the car in which two youths were killed in a police chase at Macquarie Fields are missing the point. The deaths of these twho youths might have passed without a riot if there was not already a pre-existing state of tension between some of the youth of Macquire Fields and the police. What is all that about and why is there such a state of tension?

I am particularly perturbed by the statement by one youth:

“For the past 12 years the cops have been coming here throwing blokes into the back of paddy wagons and taking them on joy rides where they beat the shit out of them. It’s no wonder everyone who lives around here hates the f—ing cops.”

That is an allegation that needs investigation,
